Infectious disease in Tilapia: Aeromonas - Intro We’ve already mentioned that tilapia is sometimes called “aquatic chicken” or “terrestrial tilapia”, from the fact that tilapia adapt so well in aquaculture and can grow so fast as chicken does. As you already know, tilapia business is growing rapidly. The culture pattern itself has shifted toward intensive and more industrial-like, in order to sever increasing demand in seafood market. Top tilapia producers of the world are China, Egypt, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. However, intensive culture means fish are reared in a very high intensive environment and this situation, if not carefully managed, can lead to many problems. Such condition will lead to water quality deterioration which become difficult to manage. This will lead to stress which make fish more susceptible to disease outbreaks in farm. The most common diseases found in tilapia culture are caused by parasite, rickettsia, bacteria and virus. For bacteria, Streptococcus spp. and Aeromonas spp. are the most dangerous in tilapia industry. Let start with Aeromonas first. Aeromonas spp. is a Gram negative bacteria in the family Aeromonadaceae. There are many species of Aeromonas. The common species found in fish and amphibian include Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas veronii and Aeromonas sobria. Aeromonas is usually not a main cause of disease itself. They are considered as opportunistic pathogen. They are ubiquitous in nature, in both soil and water. In normal situation, Aeromonas won’t cause disease except when fish are weak or stress. Aeromonas were also reported to cause disease in human (but this is rare!). Human usually contacts Aeromonas by direct contact with diseased fish. Bacteria can pass through laceration on the skin and cause dermatitis or abscess. In addition, Aeromonas can also cause food safety concern, such as diarrhea, gastritis and enteritis, especially in young and immunocompromised patient. Farm with good sanitation can help reduce the risk of Aeromonas infection in farm personnel. Wash hands frequently will reduce the risk of food poisoning by the bacteria. Next time, we will discuss about how does Aeromonas affect the fish.
