How does Aeromonas spp. impact our fish? In a tropical region such as Thailand, Aeromonas hydrophila is commonly found. A. hydropila is a causative agent of Motile Aeromonas Septicaemia (MAS) or haemorrhagic septicemia in tilapia. These bacteria inhabit in natural water and also in fish’s gut. A. hydropila does not cause disease under normal circumstance, but when something goes wrong, such as abrupt change in water quality, fish will become weak and A. hydropila reside in their body or in the environment will flare up and cause disease. The change in culture environment is usually due to over-stocking or over-feeding which result in excessive accumulation of ammonium waste. This condition will definitely make fish weak, stress and vulnerable to all diseases. Aeromonas hydrophila can be either primary (main cause) or secondary (follow the other pathogen) cause of infection. The disease can be acute (fast, abrupt progress), chronic (slow, long progress) or latent (infect without clinical sign). Disease can occur in all age group, but in hatchery and fingerling stage are the most problematic. Mortality rate in tilapia is high, from 80% to 100% during summer. Aeromonas hydrophila is found throughout tilapia intensive culture region including Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, India, Australia and the Philippines. For clinical signs of Aeromonas hydrophila, we will show you next time. Mintra Lukkana, DVM, MSc, PhD |
