“Characteristic of Aeromonas” On this topic we will tell you about the background of this bacteria Aeromonas, so we can understand how they cause disease. Aeromonas are “rod” shape, Gram-negative bacteria, with the size of 0.3-1.0 µm x 1.0-3.5 µm. They are motile which mean they are able to move around. They cannot produce spore (non-spore forming) but can produce catalase and oxidase enzymes used for their metabolic activities. Aeromonas hydrophila prefer to grow in temperature around 35-37°C, while Aeromonas salmonicida which is a pathogen of cold-water fish, prefer cooler temperature at 20-25°C. Aeromonas are facultative anaerobe which mean they can live in both aerobic (with O2 ) and anaerobic (without O2 ) environment. Aeromonas hydrophila have ability to adhere and colonize in fish’s body. They have special molecules that can connect to host cell’s receptors and help them to enter the cells. When bacteria enter a cell, it can cause cell breakdown. Aeromonas hydrophila mainly damage intestinal cells of the fish. They can also produce toxin and release them into blood circulation. Once the toxin spreads throughout the body, you will see lesions appear on several organs of the fish. There are number of toxins and enzymes involve in disease progression, for example adhesins and lectins which responsible for cell attachment. Beta-haemolysin and aerolysin cause red blood cell to break, by making pores on the cell surface. Cytotoxins kill cells. Enterotoxins damage cell in the gut and cause inflammation of stomach and intestine. Leukocidins impair immune system by damaging white blood cells. Moreover, other enzymes such as gelatinase, proteases, amylases, lipases and phospholipases also take part in damaging cells and tissues which facilitate in bacterial migration throughout the body.
