Infectious disease in tilapia: Aeromonas 5/chapter finale Here come the final chapter of Aeromonas series. “What can we do when Aeromonas infection occur?” In several countries, antibiotics were commonly used to control and treat the disease; however, we found that it didn’t work in many cases. This is because the infections were caused by antibiotics-resistance bacteria. In addition, these resistant bacteria do not withstand only one drug, most of the times, they can survive many types of antibiotics (This is called “multi-drugs resistance” bacteria). How these bacteria become resistance? It was found that genes of these bacteria are mutated or the bacteria received resistance genes from other resistance bacteria. There are many reports coming out about multi-drug resistance Aeromonas hydrophila in tilapia. This is one of the main causes of economic loss in tilapia farm. Therefore, selection of antibiotic should be done under supervision of veterinarian and individual antibiotic should be tested against particular bacteria before being used. This will make antibiotic most effective and prevent the development of drug-resistance bacteria. However, disease prevention is far more important than the use of perfect antibiotics. There are 3 main principles of disease prevention: host (fish), pathogens (Aeromonas bacteria) and environment (water). If you can manage these 3 things, the risk of Aeromonas infection will be minimized. These are examples of how you can manage the 3 principles: Host (fish/tilapia) Select good genetic fish such as genetically improved fish or specific pathogen-free fish. You may observe physical condition of the fish and discard those with abnormality. Use vaccine such as Streptococcal vaccine to prevent primary infection from Streptococcus bacteria which facilitate opportunistic infection from Aeromonas. Moreover, immunostimulant may be used. Pathogen (Aeromonas bacteria) Aeromonas are opportunistic bacteria, commonly reside in soil and water. Therefore, you should try to reduce viability bacteria in your culture system by using chemical disinfectant or mechanical (such as UV or water filter). Be careful when fresh feeds are being used. Fresh feed can be a potential source of bacterial contamination. Maintain good hygiene of all equipment and personnel used in farm. Environment (water) Maintain good water quality and provide sufficient oxygen for fish at all time during culture. Minimize stress in fish by minimize physical contacts that are needed to be perform on fish. Control temperature in culture pond. It was found that mortality rate of Aeromonas infection can reach 100% during summer. Overstocking and overfeeding of the fish should be avoided in order to prevent water quality deterioration. Basically speaking, disease prevention is always far more important than disease treatment. By minimizing all the disease risk factors, it is the most effective way to keep the disease out of the system! Mintra Lukkana, DVM, MSc, PhD Pathradol Piamsomboon , DVM , PhD
