Infectious disease in tilapia: Streptococcosis 1 The most common and the most famous disease in Thai’s tilapia farming cannot be nothing else but Streptococcosis. The disease caused by Gram-positive bacteria called Streptococcus spp. It is also a major problem in aquaculture industries all over the world. It’s often a cause of massive mortality in many species of freshwater and marine fish. Mortality rate is usually around 50-75%, especially in those susceptible fish species such as tilapia and Asian sea bass. However, the incidence of Streptococcosis is highest in tilapia. There was a study in 1996 comparing the severity of this disease between tilapia and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). It was found that after a week ok bath-immersion with Streptococcus bacteria, tilapia was presenting more severe clinical signs than the catfish. Streptococcosis can be found all types of tilapia, such as black tilapia, red tilapia and hybrid tilapia and all life stages, including fry, fingerling, grow-out and broodstock. In Thailand, Streptococcosis is reported in all tilapia-farming areas, as well as in Sea bass culture in the south. Streptococcus species that can be found in warm-water regions include Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus iniae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus ictaluri, Streptococcus parauberis, Lactococcus garvieae and Enterococcus faecalis. In Thailand, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus iniae are the two species that cause problems, mostly Streptococcus agalactiae Streptococcus bacteria are found in living things such as human, animals and plant, in environment such as water and sediment.
Sometimes, infected fish may not show any sign. This makes it harder to manage disease in farm. The disease spread fast, mostly by fish eating the dead or sick one. Bacteria can also enter a fish through skin abrasion. Fish products (fresh or frozen) can also be the sources of diseases because the bacteria may contaminate in waste from processing of these products (scale or skin removal). Next time, we will talk about characteristic of this bacteria. Stay tune! Mintra Lukkana, DVM, MSc, PhD Pathradol Piamsomboon , DVM , PhD
