Infectious disease in tilapia: Streptococcosis 4 Antibiotics (ABOs) may be used to treat bacterial infection (especially Streptococcus) and reduce the severity of clinical signs in fish. However, the use of ABOs may cause many problem, such as antibiotic residuals and antibiotic resistant bacteria. Therefore, the best way to control disease is multidisciplinary practices that do not involve antibiotic use, including: 1. Keeping good environment: Maintain good environment for fish. Fish are surrounded by water, so maintaining good water quality is necessary. Water quality should be tested routinely. Deteriorating water quality is one of the main causes of disease outbreak. Too high stocking density should not be used. This will help in reducing stress and preventing immunosuppression which lead to disease outbreak. 2. Removing sick fish: When sick or suspected fish is detected, remove and send those fish to laboratory for disease diagnostic. Sample can be live fish or freshly dead one. Keep samples in clean plastic bag, tightly close the bag and store in ice. Rotten sample should not be sent! 3. Testing ABOs sensitivity: If bacterial infection is a cause of disease and ABOs is needed. Always test antimicrobial susceptibility test every time before select ABOs. This will make sure that ABO that we are going to use will be able to kill the bacteria. The use of inappropriate ABO will not cure the disease, and waste money. More importantly, it will create Superbugs or antibiotic resistant bacteria and the use of ABOs will not be able to control bacterial infection anymore. 4. Managing outbreak: In case of an outbreak, dispose dead and sick fish immediately. To prevent disease spread, use a proper way to dispose dead fish, such as burning. Disinfect all equipment using chemical disinfectants and dry ponds long enough before starting a new crop. There are several additional ways to control Streptococcosis in farm such as vaccination and the use of probiotics. All these methods mentioned above should be applied together in order to achieve the most effective plan to minimize the risk of Streptococcosis and to improve the potential of tilapia production in Thailand.
