Tilapia broodstock management Before we are going to learn how tilapia embryo develops, let step back a little. This topic will be focusing on broodstock management and reproductive efficiency of tilapia broodstock. Tilapia are able to reproduce all year round. They start to reproduce at 3 months of age. Reproductive efficiency depends on several factors such as body size, breed, environment, and particularly, quality of nutrition. Feed management for tilapia broodstock is very important to keep the production of tilapia fry going. Broodstock should be fed with high quality feed in the sufficient amount. Reproductive cycle of tilapia usually takes 4-6 weeks which means that tilapia breed 5-6 times per year. That was what occurs in nature, but in farm situation, it is quite different. Only good characteristic and healthy tilapia are chosen to be used as broodstock. At first, fish at the size of 15-25 cm in length and 150-200 g in weight are selected. Similar size males and females are allocated into the same pond in the ratio of 1 male to 2-3 females, with overall stocking density of 2 fish per cubic meter. Then, males and females are allowed to breed naturally. During this period, high protein (25-30% protein) diet should be used at the ratio of 0.5-1% of fish bodyweight per day. Behavior of the fish should be routinely monitored. Presence of eggs in female’s buccal cavity should be monitored every 5-7 days. If we allow females to hold the eggs in their buccal cavity for too long, eggs will hatch and that will cause problem to our management routine. Precision of detecting eggs in buccal cavity of female fish is very important. Eggs should be transfer to the hatchery with special care, otherwise, it will affect fish health in the later stages of development. In egg collection, it is very likely that we will not find eggs at the same stage of development from the fish in the same pond because we cannot control them to reproduce at the exact same time. Developmental stages of eggs obtained from females in the pond are not the same. There are several factors that also influence egg development such as water temperature (Faster development occurs when water temperature is high). Therefore, eggs in the same developmental stage should be sorted into the same incubation container for effective farm management. Next time, let see how tilapia embryo develops.
