Tilapia culture system: tanks and raceway A few days ago, we have come across with an interesting article about different culture systems for tilapia in other countries. In Thailand, the most common systems are pond system which may be earthen pond or concreate pond, or floating cage system. So, today we will tell you about other types of culture system that are rarely used in Thailand such as tank and raceway. Tank for tilapia culture comes in different size and shape, from 10-1,000 cubic meter rectangle, square, round or oval shape. The most important factor in tank designing is waste management. How to remove solid waste effectively! In tank system, drain is usually installed at the center of the tank and that why it is called “central drain”. Water that circulates the tank in unidirectional way will make those solid waste to accumulate at the center of the tank, so it can be removed by the central drain. Also, the recirculating system in the tank-based system was developed in those cold countries to be able to culture tilapia or other tropical fish/shrimp all year round. Basic components of the recirculating system are quite similar to the basic system except additional solids removal device, biofilter, aerator or oxygen generator and a degassing unit. Circular tank is commonly used to facilitate solid removal. Octagonal tanks and square tanks with rounded corners provide a suitable alternative with better space utilization. Additional water treatment such as ozonation, denitrification and foam fractionation may also be applied. When looking at water exchange rate, tank system exchanges water for less than 0.5% of the total volume. Therefore, elimination of nitrogen waste mainly depends on nitrification process. On the other hand, water exchange rate is very high for the raceway system, sometimes more than 180 times than the tank system. So, nitrification process is not usually needed. Another type of system that is being used, it is called the “combined extensive-intensive” (CEI) or Dekel system. The water used in tank is recycled in the large reservoir pond using biological filter such as algae. The optimal ratio between tank and reservoir should be 1:10 to 1:18 and this system requires the oxygen to be pumped into rearing tanks, because dissolved oxygen is essential for stabilizing water quality for this system.
