Health assessment for farm animals We have talked about how to collect samples for disease diagnosis in the previous topic. Laboratory diagnosis is not only for the disease confirmation but also for the assessment of the animal health in the farm. In addition to the disease prevention and control measures in the farm, surveillance program and health monitoring are also important. Health monitoring is an effective tool that gives you the information to be used for health management on the farm. So today, we will talk about one part of the health monitoring plan which is the sample collection for health assessment for farm animals. Sample collection for health assessment for farm animals is similar to the sample collection for disease diagnosis except for the numbers of sample collected and frequency of sample collection. Generally, a health check is performed twice a year for consecutively 2 years. A total of 30-150 samples are collected for each time, depending on the suspected prevalence for each disease. See table for an example (OIE, 2014). Numbers of sampling, based on an estimate disease prevalence. Assume 1005 specificity and sensitivity of the test.
