What cause diseases in Tilapia ???
Diseases in tilapia may cause by several factors. But, actually, if you look closely, there are only 3 factors that relate to disease occurrence, which are FISH, AGENT (bacteria, virus, parasite, etc.), and Environment (fish pond). There is a complex relationship between these factors, and when there is an imbalance, disease is likely to occur. Those imbalance situation may be:
- increasing number of weak fish in the pond
- the agent is getting stronger and increase in number which can spread more effectively
- changes in water quality parameters that support the spreading of the agent and induce stress in fish, such as too high stocking density, poor water quality (high ammonia, low oxygen, etc..), bad weather, and poor management (for example, when there is too many leftover feed in the pond which lead to bad water quality -> stress fish -> weakness -> disease). Therefore, farmer should pay close attention right from the beginning by:
- selecting good quality fish for broodstock
- use high quality fry for stocking
- use optimum stocking density
- routinely observe fish behavior
- check water quality routinely and adjust to the optimum level
- carried out health management plans, such as checking growth rate, examining ectoparasite, etc.
All these management strategies are aimed to prevent any riskthat may has an effect to this relationship of FISH, AGENT and Environment!
