From last time, we’ve talked about Water quality and How to collect water sample. As you can see, WATER! is one the most important factors in aquaculture. Remember, good water leads to better and healthier fish! So, Today, We want to give you some more information about this issue, which is: “How does oxygen (O2 ) or Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.) effect the fish” All living creature on earth need O2 , fish also. Theoretically, fish requires at least 5 ppm of D.O. However, it also depends on fish species, some fish have special breathing organ and can survive in low oxygen situation (such as, catfish, snakehead fish), some fish need high level of oxygen (such as, minnow) And, where’s the O2 come from? The O2 can be added to water by multiple ways, including: - O2 can dissolve from the atmosphere directly - Photosynthesis by plants and phytoplanktons On the other hand, O2 is also being used by many things: - All liveing things in the water, animal and plants are breathing on O2 - O2 is required by bacteria for composing organic waste - Sometimes, O2 can evaporate back to the atmosphere Moreover, temperature, air pressure, water depth as well as different time of a day or season also have an effect on Dissolved Oxygen.
- High air temperature >> O2 can dissolve in the water less>> Lower D.O. During the day, where light is available, D.O. level is high due photosynthesis activity by plants (algae) and phytoplankton. This is opposit in early morning or during a night where photosynthesis does not occur. From this reason, controling number of plants (algae) and phytoplankton in fish pond is necessary. Overgrowth of plants (algae) and phytoplankton would lead to O2 deleption during the night and also high fluctuation of O2 level between day and night (very high during a day, very low during the night).
This is also importance because fluctuation of O2 level can weakening and stress the fish. What happen to FISH if D.O. level is low??? - You may see fish move their operculum faster - Fish show up at the water surface more often (gasping for air) - Decrease growth rate, weak - Slow hatching rate (in eggs) - Abrupt drop in O2 level can lead to mass mortility in the pond Common practices that are used to increase O2 level in fish pond such as: - Applying aerator, paddle wheel, air tube,..etc - Water exchage: pumping in fresh, high O2 in - Control number of plants (algae) and phytoplankton using chemical such as copper (prevent sharp drop of O2 ) Therefore!!! Make sure that you measure O2 or D.O. routinely and maintain it throughout the culture period. Remember!! water qaulity is important for sucessful crop!
