The Thai Meteorological Department has announced “The beginning of summer of Thailand 2017” The director general has stated that “High temperature is expected, in the range between 42-43 o C, especially during April which the summer will end in mid-May. The highest temperature is expected in the northern part, follows by the north-eastern and the central region.”
The statement may cause some concerns to the farmers that this hot weather might affect their fish.
Basically, the optimum temperature for tropical fish culture is between 25-32 o C.
And. Have you ever wonder “Why surrounding temperature is so important to fish?”
Because,
Fish are poikilothermic (cold-blooded) animal, which means their body temperature varies, depending on the surrounding temperature.
More, the immune system of fish can function properly only when the surrounding temperature are in normal physiological range. For example, if the water temperature rises for 10 o C, fish metabolic rate may be double.
So. What you can see when water temperature increases?
- First, you may see the fish swim faster and their metabolic rate increases
- Increase breathing. You may observe that fish move their operculum faster.
- When fish in the pond is breathing faster, this means much more oxygen is being used. Therefore, dissolve oxygen (D.O.) will reduce significantly. This is dangerous! Because, in low oxygen situation, fish are weaker and might die from oxygen depletion and they would less resistance to the abrupt temperature change.
Not only air temperature has effect on water temperature, other factors such as, wind speed, water depth, light intensity and water turbidity also have some influences. Therefore, farm owner should have plan to manage the temperature in culture ponds.
For example, installing “shading net” to reduce light intensity that may cause excessive temperature change and damage our fish.
