Acid-base, or as we usually recall as “pH”. For tilapia culture, suitable pH that should maintained in the pond is in the range between 6-9. “pH” is scaled from 1-14, which pH 7 is considered as “neutral”, while pH<7 are considered as acid and pH>7 are base. Level of acid-base or pH is based on the amount of H + ion in the water. In addition, there are several factors that also influence pH level in pond, such as pond bottom quality (soil type), topography and numbers of living creatures in the water. pH level indeed has influence to those who live in the water. Plants are not able to grow well under pH 4.5. In low pH (acid) situation, fish will produce excessive mucus. Fish will swim faster than usual and may show signs of porpoising and gasping for air. While in case of high pH (base) situation, gill and fins are irritated which ulcer may be presented. Importantly, fish are sensitive to ammonia toxicity in this situation. pH level is changing during a day. Photosynthesis by plants and phytoplankton that occurs during a day will use up CO 2 in the pond (CO 2 is acid), which will result in high pH (base) situation. Whereas during the night, pH will decrease due to no photosynthesis occur, but CO 2 is still produced by respiration of all living in the pond. pH measuring should be done twice in a day, at early morning and midday. pH level should not change more than 2 units within a day. Measuring pH will help farmers notice the problem and be able to assess the problem before any damage occur. For instance, fixing low pH situation (acid) by liming, removing organic waste, reduce feed and exchanging water.
