Salinity is the total concentration of salt dissolving in water, especially sodium chloride (NaCl). Common unit of measurement for salinity is “parts per thousand or ppt”. Generally, salinity level is used to categorized types of water into: - Fresh water, 0-0.5 ppt salinity - Brackish water, 0.5-30 ppt salinity - Sea water, >30 ppt salinity Salinity level is depended on the location of the pond, as well as types of soil and mineral. As the other water quality parameters, salinity also impacts fish health. Cautious should be taken when taking fresh water fish to rear in brackish water or from brackish water to sea water. Fish should not be directly transferred to water that has large different in salinity from where the fish come from. Change the water salinity at small rate at the time before releasing the fish into the new salinity. However, the new salinity level should not exceed the fish normal capacity to tolerate it. Each species of fish can withstand different salinity levels. For larger fish, they are less tolerance to salinity change than smaller fish. Some fresh water fish can tolerate only 7 ppt salinity. Abrupt change in salinity or being in too high salinity situation, fish will have problem with osmoregulation. This has significant effect on fish physiology, such as growth performance, and sometimes lead to death. For tilapia. Generally, they can withstand wide range of salinity which different tilapia species can stand different levels of salinity. For instance, Nile tilapia can grow well under salinity at 15 ppt, Blue tilapia has a little more tolerance at <20 ppt and Mozambique Tilapia can be reared in high salinity water as high as sea water. Basically, the optimum salinity for fresh water fish, including tilapia is between 0-5 ppt.
