Ammonia (NH 3 ), Nitrite (NO 2 - ) and Nitrate (NO 3 - ) are important nitrogen based compounds in fish pond ecosystem. Bacteria decompose organic waste in fish pond, producing ammonia and water plants will uptake ammonia and use as a protein source.
When ammonia is presented in pond, some of them will be oxidized by bacteria into nitrite and nitrate which also be used by plants.
If the oxygen level in water is low, nitrate will be turned back into nitrite and ammonia by “denitrification” process. This nitrogen cycle requires oxygen, therefore, in pond with large amount of organic waste, bacteria will need to consume large amount of oxygen and this will affect all living things in the pond.
Levels of nitrogen compounds in the pond are indicators for water quality. High level of nitrate indicates that this water has been bad for a while. If pond prolongs the level of nitrate at
above 50 ppm, this will decrease oxygen level and affect fish health.
High protein feed that is used in fish culture industry also relates to high level of nitrite in pond. However, nitrite is not a
big problem when compared to ammonia.
Ammonia toxicity is commonly found fish. There are several ways to reduce toxicity of ammonia or in nitrite fish found. For example:
- Add chlorine compound, such as salt (NaCl) to the pond
- Reduce feed, this way will reduce amount of organic waste which are nitrogen source in the pond.
- Increase oxygen level in pond
