There are 2 forms of ammonia in pond, unionized ammonia (NH 3 ) and ionized Ammonia (NH 4 + ). Unionized form is more toxic to animal than ionized form. Water pH will be the one who determine the amount of unionized ammonia or ionized ammonia in pond. It will affect gill and fish’s respiration. Unionized ammonia in water can pass through gills into blood circulation and inhibit hemoglobin from binding with oxygen. The level of unionized ammonia in pond should not kept below 0.02 ppm. If the level reach 1 ppm, you will see a problem. You may observe fish gasping for air, their fins and skin turn red. Gill may become purple in color because there is no oxygen exchange. To reduce toxic unionized ammonia in pond: You may perform - Reduce feed, this will reduce nitrite level which then reduce ammonia level. Keep in mind! If ammonia level increased, the level nitrite will increase too and when the nitrite level reaches 1 ppm, fish may suffer from a disease called “brown blood disease”. The disease happens when fish’s blood cannot carry oxygen. Fish usually come to the surface to breath, and their operculum move faster. Later on, their gill will turn brown to black and fish will eventually die from lack of oxygen if you cannot reduce nitrite level in pond.
