The use of probiotics on prevention of virus and fungus is a new concept in aquatic or even human medicine. In our society, there are increasing studies regarding the use of probiotics to fight against virus infection in fish and shrimp. For example: - The use of probiotics, Bacillus megaterium mixed with shrimp feed. The result revealed that Pacific white shrimp were more resistance to White spot disease (WSD) after being fed by this combination. - Olive flounders fed with Bacillus + Sporolactobacillus were found to be more resistance to lymphocystis, a common viral disease in fish. On the other hand, there are only a few studies about antifungal activity of probiotics in aquaculture.
Bacteria Aeromonas media were isolated from shortfin eel (Anguilla australis) and were used as probiotics against fungi, Saprolegnia sp. which are abundant in aquatic environment. However, this study was performed under laboratory condition.
In addition, there was a study showing that probiotics Lactobacillus plantarum were used to inhibit aquatic fungi, Saprolegnia parasitica infection in striped catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus).
