Animal vectors Another risk factor that we cannot overlook is the “animals” roaming our farm, carrying disease(s) with them. These animals are called “Vectors” A vector is a living organism that transmits an infectious agent from an infected animal to a human or another animal. A vector can be in any form; it could be a fish in a natural reservoir accidentally slip into culture system. Wild bird, migratory bird, wildlife, pest animals such as rodent as well as pet animal such as dog and cat. Disease agents such as bacteria or viruses can attach to these animals and accidentally slip into a farm. Some animals love to sneak in and feed on dead and moribund fish and may carry those disease-infested fish to the neighboring pond, farm or natural water source outside the farm. Preventing animal vectors A main idea is to “Limit contact” between our animals and other animals that have potential to carry diseases. Biosecurity measure has described how to manage this issue. For example: - Install “bird net” - Apply filter membrane for water entering a farm - Waste management: all waste containers should be covered, and dispose waste routinely - Keeping farm’s landscape neat and tidy - Maintain good sanitary of feed and other farm equipment. Store feed in a secure place, safe from pest infestation. - Standard toilet should be provided - Pet should not be allowed to enter culture area The preventive measure involves fish, shellfish (in natural resource), predator, dog, cat and rat that able sneak into the farm. The population of these animal should be controlled. Elimination should be carried out if needed. |
