Probiotics and their functions: Reproduction enhancement We have talked about biosecurity, quarantine and disease risk factors for many weeks now, let go back to the topic regarding “Probiotics”. Today, we will discuss about the benefit of probiotics on the reproductive system of farmed fish. Many researchers have looked into this issue for years. Generally, aquatic animal during reproductive stage requires high level of nutrient. Proper amount of protein, fatty acid, vitamin C, E and carotid should be present in feed. Moreover, nutrients absorption is also crucial. Balance of the nutrients in feed and absorption process of the animal will influence in all reproductive activities such as fertilization, spawning and embryo development. There are several feed formulas designed for “breeder”. Some farms may use live feed, such as small fish or shrimp, squid, and mussels. However, nutrient level in these feed cannot be determined and the feed may be contaminated by disease agents. Therefore, live feed may not suitable for high value broodstock. On the other hand, probiotics might be more useful. Probiotics have been used with feed to create balance of microorganism in brooder’s gut. Balance microorganism community will enhance nutrient absorption and improve disease resistance which will facilitate the reproduction system. There was a study about probiotics Bacillus subtilis that can increase reproductive performance of aquarium fish. By giving probiotics Bacillus subtilis at the rate of 106 -108 per gram of feed can increase gonadosomatic index (GSI), fecundity (number of egg in ovary before spawn) and larvae’s survival rate. In addition, some probiotic bacteria can produce vitamin B complex, especially vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B12 which help reduce mortality and malformity of fish larvae. Another study showed that probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium and Bifidobacterium thermophilum mixed with feed also gave similar results in Swordtail fish. The reproductive functions of aquatic animals are indeed influenced by nutrition, as well as food digestion and nutrient absorption and probiotics are sure to support all these both directly and indirectly.
